My Passion for Sewing
My Mum can be 'blamed' for getting me into sewing, when I was aged around 5 years. We lived in New Zealand and there were not many clothes shops available, however there were many fabric shops and plenty of women who sewed at home. One of Mum's good friends had been a curtain maker in the UK before she travelled to NZ. When my Mum knew that we would be sailing back to the UK on a trip due to take around 5 weeks, she spend hours making a range of suitable clothes for us both to wear in a range of climates.
I used to borrow my Mum's sewing machine to make my first dresses, skirts and work suits. Got my own first sewing machine aged 18 and then proceeded to make all my bridesmaids' dresses and my going away outfits. I made myself skirts, dresses, night clothes, work suits, bridesmaids' dresses after practicing on making clothes for my dolls and then for history projects at school. Since getting married I made curtains, cushions and other home products, as well as smart clothes for work and leisure clothes for myself and family members.
For a few years, due to work commitments requiring lots of travel, I took a reluctant break from my sewing obsessions, returning to sewing in a more prolific fashion around 2002. Since then I have acquired a 'Horne' sewing centre which has been a real boon to helping with storing my sewing notions and machines providing ready access to them.
Right now, my sewing machine collection comprises a 'Novum', embroidery machine, as well as an overlocker without which I would find sewing these days with the modern fabrics available almost impossible and a small portable John Lewis modern electric sewing machine which is versatile to take with me when visiting friends and family, also when attending sewing retreat days. My latest addition to the sewing machine family is an old Singer sewing machine in black with gold lettering in an original hand carved wooden carry case, a present from my beloved for Christmas. The box itself is a piece of beauty, in its own right....
